Metro reported on the 18th September that a press conference was likely to be on the 5th, which would fit nicely with Apple’s iOS5 and iPhone5. However Jason D. O’Grady article over at ZDNet on the 23rd suggests a October 4th.
Whichever date in October it is, there would certainly be many disappointed faces if an iOS5 launches without an iPhone5.
